I had an eloquent and thoughtful response for every single question the interviewer tossed my way. She had laughed at my jokes. We even bonded over our love for dogs. I knew I had knocked the meeting out of the park, and I was already picturing my name emblazoned on those glossy new business cards.A couple of days later, the emaille I had been anxiously awaiting arrived in my inbox. I clicked it open as fast as I possibly could, eager for the confirmation of the news I was so sure was headed my way. Visions of confetti, a marching band, and the hiring manager leaping out of an oversized cake flashed before my eyes.But, that good news and rejoicing isn t what I got. Instead, I quickly skimmed through the email to see all of those clich lines we all dread reading. They really liked me, but I wasnt the perfect fit. There were many qualified candidates. It was a pleasure to meet me. Blah, blah, blah.My heart sunk into my shoes. How could this happen? I thought I had this all locked up. But, things didnt pan out- I had failed. Youll hear a lot of advice and sympathetic anecdotes about failure during the course of your career. And, Ill be the first to admit it In the heat of the moment- when your eyes are totenstill teary and your ego is still bruised- they dont really help all that much. Yes, the intentions are great. I know that failure sucks. Theres no ifs, ands, or buts about it. However, it really can still be a valuable learning experience. In fact, there are a few things that you can only learn by failing.So, when youve finally polished off those snacks and are feeling at least somewhat receptive to some constructive encouragement, keep these lessons in mind. Because, no matter what it feels like, that torturous brush with failure really was good for something.1. Theres Always Room for ImprovementWhen youve failed, its human nature to grasp at straws and generate all sorts of excuses as to why this wasnt your fault. That project was too difficult or the deadline was too short. That client was rude. That company was always going to hire someone from the inside. There was notlagehing you could do.However, youll never be able to view something as a learning experience if youre convinced you have absolutely nothing to learn. Im sure youre stellar at what you do, but that doesnt mean you get to coast for the rest of your life. All of us- I mean it, every sing le one of us- has areas where we could do better. And, theres nothing like failure (and that insightful feedback that results from it) to highlight those areas for us in obnoxious, cant-miss neon yellow. 2. Persistence Is Your Greatest QualityEverybody fails (but, no, I wont bring up Abraham Lincoln). Its an inevitable part of life. You wont succeed at everything you try. And, if youre currently operating with that assumption, I hate to tell you that youll soon end up sorely disappointed.However, miserably failing at something quickly reminds you that you cant let a few stumbles (or even full-blown wipeouts) completely stop you in your tracks. Instead, you need to pick yourself up, dust yourself off, and keep pushing forward. You likely have tons of great qualities that make you an awesome person and employee. But, of all of these, persistence is the one thats going to get you the furthest in your career. Because you wont ever get anywhere if you insist on staying stuck. Just ask go od ol Honest Abe. 3. Life Goes OnHere it is The granddaddy of all clich career lessons. When youve failed at something- particularly something that you really, desperately wanted- its all too easy to picture the entire world crumbling down around you like a scene from Independence Day. This is it. Youll never get past this. But, if you take one thing from this article, it should be this The world does not stop turning simply because things didnt pan out the way you wanted them to. But, you know what else I could fill those pages with? My successes. And, now that I think about it, those wins were all results of tweaking my approach after previous failures. So, while failing might never be fun, you can bet it will always be valuable.

But there have been a number of complaints that have gone with this bulky safety gear. Though there may be limitations to what you can do for helmet hair, the lugging of a cumbersome helmet throughout the day may have an answer down the road.Philippe Videau was in his final year as an aerospace engineering student at UCLA when an internship at Autodesk, a company highly focused on software, allowed him a chance to do far more than glorified paper shuffling. With six interns assigned to see what the companys software could do, three branched off to work on a bike helmet, one that might even fit into a smaller bag, taking up a fraction of the usual required space. The key word? Mushroom.The kollektiv used mycelium, a part of a mushroom, and this molding material would allow for a helmet to be molded according to a riders head. It would also be foldable.When not in use, the helmet folds into a strip of small segments. Image Philippe Videau / AutodeskYou get a kit and ultimately activate the mushroom by breaking apart a mixture and over weeks you get this foam-like material and even have to cure it in an oven to stop it from growing, he says. As far as the actual shape of the helmet, they did some testing on growing the mycelium similar to a half soccer ball shape. It was pretty heavy because it was 3D printed with a heavier plastic but could be printed on a much lighter plasticthink about something like plastics from a MakerBot, Videau says.The prototype was a very positive result for Videau, taking up between 40% and 50% less space, he says. Its almost like you can crumple it up and it will be at the bottom of your backpack, he says. If you take a helmet based on your head geometry then it will be more comfortable because often times people buy a helmet either too big or too s mall. The mycelium is grown in a mold and you get a 3D model out of it and make it into a mold. You can scan your head with a 3D abtaster or just take your smartphone to take 30 to 40 pictures for the process of photogrammetry.Videau also points out that mycelium isnt just good for making space in your bag but for saving landfill space as well. Much of the material for bike helmets isnt great for the environment, he says. This material is biodegradable.Videau is hopeful that the helmet will keep moving forward but he already takes with him what he found to be a tremendous experience. On that note, here are five all-too-common bad habits that might be holding you back in the office1. Saying Sorry When Youre NotHow often do you start a hard conversation at work with, Im sorry but Quite often, I bet. (Especially if youre a woman.) But automatically using this defense mechanism doesnt do you, or the person youre saying it to, any favors. In an article on The Muse, writer Angeline Evans says that it can actually undercut your professionalism by introducing doubt and diminishing others confidence in you.The next time youre tempted to say it, test out one of these responses instead. Setting Up Meetings for No ReasonHeres a a scary statistic for you Executives spend, on average, four hours per week preparing just for status update meetings. You know what I mean- the meetings in which at least three people will say Nothing much new from me this week. Ill pass to Kevin. Thats simply not an efficient use of anyones time.So, this year, executive or not, make a promise to yourself that you wont tischset up any meetings without asking yourself what the point is first. No, Im not being obnoxious. Make sure every meeting you arrange has a clear purpose, as well as a good reason for why the information cant simply be disseminated in an email. And, when you have to plan one, you can ensure that itll be short, productive, and to the po int by sending out an agenda in advance. Or even making it a stand-up meeting Youll be pleasantly surprised how much faster everything moves when people are on their feet. 4. Being a Model of EfficiencyYoure a really task-focused person and you love to come into the office early, tackle your inbox and be productive all day long. Lunch breaks? What are those? Small talk in the kitchen? Who has time to hear about a co-workers weekend?But by channelling a robot at the office, youre robbing yourself of the chance to get to know your colleagues. Which, the benefits of liking the people you work with aside, inevitably makes your job harder down the road. Who will Carol want to help more? John, who always grabs a coffee with her at 3 PM? You can vent for one glass of wine, but over the next one you have to come up with a plan of action. Is your co-worker always giving you unconstructive criticism? Confront her (when youre sober) and put an end to it. Does your babo keep changing the teams goals without telling anyone? Email him or her and ask if you can find a time to go over your daily, monthly, and quarterly goals. Someone keep e ating your lunch, despite the fact your names written all over it? Jorgensen shared some of the fruchtwein persistent myths about working from home, as well as what the reality behind them is.Its true that whether or not you can work from home is largely dependent on where you work, but many people assume that they cant work from home as a defau lt without actually talking to their employer about it. The truth is, Jorgensen says, more and more companies are allowing their employees to work from home.Without question, were landseeing an increasing number of organizations offer some type of work-from-home benefit, Jorgensen shares. Today, around 2.9 percent of the total U.S. workforce works from home at least half of the time. This is up from 1.8 percent roughly a decade ago representing a 115 percent increase. Jorgensen credits this largely due to the advent of cloud-based business platforms, remote communication tech and an increasingly competitive talent market in which employers must offer increasingly top-notch benefits to attract candidates. Working from home is often a fairly simple benefit for employers to implement, as the costs are low, the ROI is high and a majority of positions in corporate settings are computer-based and do not require a physical presence. However, if youre still nervous about approaching your manager to discuss the possibility of remote work, you can always start small.It may be easier to start by asking them to allow you to work from home just a day or two a week. If you prove your reliability and maintain or even increase your productivity in doing so, it could be an easier sell to go 100 percent virtual down the road, Jorgensen says. You could point to the numerous resources available online that expound on the increased employee morale, engagement and retention rates enjoyed by employers who offer flexible work environments. These organizations tend to have reduced overhead, absenteeism and tardiness as well as an increased ability to recruit outstanding employees.While its true that there are a few people out there who will take advantage of those looking to work from home with scams and illegitimate job postings, that doesnt mean there arent still plenty of real remote jobs available - you just have to approach your job hunt with a critical eye.With any job, you re going to want to do your research This is where a site like Glassdoor is invaluable, Jorgensen says. Read about the company you want to join and get a sense of their culture. Do they seem on board with this growing remote trend? What are current and former employees saying about them? Are they reputable? As you go through the interview process, which will more likely than not leverage a mix of both phone and video screening, youre going to want to ask all the natural questions you would when joining any organization, remote or otherwise.In addition to using sites like Glassdoor to find remote positions, you can also use your network to find opportunities.Consider how to leverage professional networking sites like LinkedIn to facilitate an introduction to those currently working for that company, Jorgensen shares. Search for current employees, see which mutual connections you share and see if you can secure a conversation. With luck, you may be able to land an introduction to HR or the relevant hiring manager, separating you from the pack of other applicants.While there may not be anybody there physically to monitor how youre using your time, working remotely doesnt mean that youll be putting in less effort or hours - in fact, it often means the opposite, Jorgensen says.Most remote employees are surprised to find themselves working more as opposed to less when compared to when they were in on-site positions. After all, there is no commute to account for and the work is always within arms reach, she points out.Besides, even if your boss isnt keeping an eye on your computer the whole time to make sure you arent goofing off, youre still going to be held to the same performance standards as you were before - perhaps even higher ones now that youve been given so much trust. Because of this, you might find yourself burning out more than you expected.A different type of discipline is required in this case to make sure youre achieving a sustainable work/life b alance, Jorgensen suggests.Again, this will largely depend on what kind of company youre working for, but for the most part, if you have a strong relationship with your team, theres no reason to think that people will take you less seriously just because youre working from home.If the organization is forward-thinking in this regard and fully embraces the notion that you will attract and retain top talent by offering telecommuting options to your employees, then certainly they are taking this into account with their succession planning when it comes time to promote individuals from within. In our organization, for example, we have individuals who are remotely managing large teams. In the right organization, remote work and career growth are not mutually exclusive.To make sure that you arent seen as out of sight and out of mind, though, you can always be proactive abo ut promoting yourself to make sure that your contributions are being seen and valued.Yes, there are definitely big perks to working from home. But just because you can save money on transportation and wake up ten minutes before youre on the clock doesnt mean that working from home is without any drawbacks.If youre going to make the jump over to being a remote employee, you need to be self-aware. Are you ok with not physically working side-by-side with other human beings? Will you miss that watercooler environment too much?
